Military correspondence, 1854-1860, of Captain Stewart, at Fort Leavenfort and Fort Wise (Kansas Territory). Included are abstracts of ordnance stores, 1854, April and Sept. 1858; a memo re: procedures, 1859; returns of clothing and equipment, Sept. and Dec. 1860; property accounts, 1860; quarterly returns of the QuarterMaster stores, 1860; and a list of recruits, 1856. There are also four letters from a friend in Baltimore (Md.), signed "G. Ns", concerning recruitment of soldiers in Kalamazoo and Detroit (Mich.), the Crimean War, the death of a drunken soldier at Fort Henry after fighting with an officer, and personal affairs, June 28-July 14, 1855. Also included is Stewart's service record (copy, 1 p.).

George H. Stewart was a Los Angeles banker associated with the Bank of America and active with the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. He was the president of the Chamber of Commerce from 1908 to 1909.
